Installation programme completed at flagship Primark store

April 29, 20190

GG Glass has completed a four week installation programme at Primark’s flagship store in Milton Keynes. Access to the city centre site was challenging at this large scale glazing programme, incorporating three vast elevations.

Description

Primark’s new flagship store in Milton Keynes, located at the former BHS site in Silbury Arcade, is the largest store to open in the centre of Milton Keynes in the past 25 years.  Set over three floors and at 75,000 sq ft, and as one of the largest Primark’s in the UK, GG Glass has completed all external façade glazing works.

Working on behalf of Graham Construction’s Fit-Out division under a design, supply and install contract, GG Glass are recognised as experts in the retail sector.

The city centre location and sheer size of a number of the glass panels, some of which weighed in excess of 850kg per panel, made this a particularly challenging contract. The team used specially designed ‘A’ frame glass stillgates for transporting the large glass panel’s through restricted access doors.

Products Used

Prosper Architects specified the use of Carey Glass, considered one of the most technically advanced glass processing manufactures in the world. Using specially-adapted glazing bolts that were attached to the inner pane of the glass and fixed back to the steel structure, the façade was designed to create an appearance of a flush glazed system.

The glass specification included:

  • 5mm clear, toughened and laminated
  • Low iron
  • Heat soaked
  • Tested with polar white interlayer
  • Primark branding was digitally printed to the face of the glass

Outcome and client testimonial

Completed in April 2019, on time and within budget, the scheme has been successfully completed and handed over to the client ready for official store opening later the same month.

Ray Moss, Director at GG Glass commented: “Our work at the Primark store in Milton Keynes demonstrates our expert retail capabilities. We are well versed in the management of restricted city centre sites where access can be challenging and there is a strong public presence.

“We were able to install a series of huge panels using expert handling machinery and equipment. Three facades facing three distinct shopping areas within the city where installed across a four week period. We’ve received fantastic feedback from the contractor and client in terms of our approach, service and delivery.”

Wilbert Speedy, Construction Manager at Graham Construction commented: “As you are aware, Primark Milton Keynes opened yesterday. The store was very well received by Primark senior management and many thank for all your efforts for bringing this project to a very successful conclusion.”
